Before we accept a job offer or join a club, we should take a hard look at the people.

Not just the website and comp package. But the people. Their values, goals, hobbies, and habits.

Do we want to be more like them?

Sometimes we can change and improve the cultures of the teams we join, but we should recognize that the people will also change us.

Peer pressure is real.

St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier founded the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church. They were college roommates before they were priests and missionaries.

Thomas Edison and Henry Ford vacationed together in Ft. Myers, FL.

J.R.R. Tolkien and CS Lewis were both Oxford professors and members of an informal club of literary pals called the Inklings.

Long before Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, they were best friends who met at an improv club in Chicago.

Consciously and unconsciously, our values, goals, hobbies, and habits are shaped by the people around us.

Peer pressure is real.

Before we accept a job offer or join a club, we should take a hard look at the people.

And choose wisely.
